The first step in preparing to painting is a detailed examination of the car. Special attention should be paid to tar built up on the body which should be removed with anti-silicone solvent, and to paint swells containing rust underneath. Damaged paint should be removed, and the metal should be sanded with sandpaper to smooth (if the crater is rather deep, it can be puttied). There can also be grease marks on the paint, they need to be removed with degreaser, spot by spot. After cleaning all the grime and fixing damages, it is recommended to examine the car body thoroughly once again.
The car is ready to be washed. Main tips: when washing the car at the car wash station choose the simplest option, without waxing and special agents, just a simple degreasing car cleanser, and drying. Ask to blow the remaining water out of all the nooks and crannies. Be sure to check for the water yourself and blow the water off, the car should be completely dry before you start painting.
Dempinox does not require car disassembling before a whole-car painting, but to improve the quality of the coating and increase its durability it is recommended that some elements are removed. For example, rare lights. In most cars they are fixed with two screws and their removal takes 5 minutes. It is faster and simpler than to mask the whole light with tape. In addition to speeding up the preparation process, rare lights removal will enable you to paint the body under them, hiding the edge of the coating from potential damage in future. It is also recommended to remove a radiator grille and mirrors, if it is technically feasible without disassembling the interior and removing the bumper. As to mirrors, when they are painted from all the sides, some paint settles on the door at different angles and creates overspray, that is why it’s recommended that the mirrors are painted separately. Make sure you removed weather stripping from the doors.
Next stage of preparation is body degrease. The power of adhesion of Dempinox composite to the surface of the body depends upon the quality of degrease. The whole body should be degreased, it is recommended to perform the procedure twice. Wipe very well the front bumper, the hood, the roof and wheel arches, as these are the places to collect all road grime and grease.
Before applying Dempinox polymer coating and completing the transformation of your car, there is a final stage – masking all body elements not intended to be painted. These are glass, lights, weather strips, and moldings. First, we have to choose a masking tape and a material we will use to cover the surface we are not going to paint. We can use a plastic film, paper, and other materials at hand. Specialists at Dempinox Company choose masking paper which is easy to cut into necessary shapes, it does not wrinkle from paint as a plastic film, and later can be removed in one piece. A masking tape should be resistant to solvent. Bad tape choice results in its coming off at the most inappropriate time. Don’t skimp on the tape, since a cheap tape may well leave an adhesive residue which is very difficult to clean off.
Important! Don’t rush, perform each prep stage thoroughly and carefully, especially masking the car.
When masking the glass, it is necessary to leave a 1 cm space from the edge, later it will make it easier to remove the tape after painting. Outline the glass putting the tape along the edge and remembering to leave the space, then cut a necessary shape from paper and put it onto the outline.
The process of masking the lights is mostly the same to that of masking the glass, you only do not need to leave a space. You should mask the entire light, the edges of the light should be masked very carefully so that when removing the tape you do not pull up or damage the wet coating. Wrap up the engine radiator with paper.
Moldings, rubber strips, turn signal lights and other small parts are masked with a single tape strip running exactly at the edge, which will simplify and speed up the following unmasking.
Door jambs can be painted or left in body’s original color. When painting the door jambs, we mask with paper the door panels and door frame along the outline of the body part to be painted. The door jambs are painted separately, with the door open.
If leaving the door jambs in their original color, you should apply a masking tape as a contour line, 4 centimeters apart from the outer part of the door frame, and close the door. Enough material will overspray through the slit between the body and the door, and the tape you earlier put in the door frame will create a clean crisp line instead of random spray pattern.
The right way to paint the wheels is to remove them from the car, and let the air pressure out of the tires. The tire will come off the rim and allow putting masking tape and paper there.
One does not always have the possibility and equipment to remove the wheels. With Dempinox polymer the wheels can be painted without removing them from the car. Apply masking tape around the rim, tucking it a little between the rim and the tire, and follow with masking the tire with a plastic film or paper. After the tire is masked, be sure to blow the wheels with compressed air to ensure that the masking will not come off when being painted.
When painting the body without painting rims, the wheels are masked altogether.
Painting only the wheels and not the body mask the tire around the rim, and mask wheel arches for half a meter to all directions, so that the material does not get on the body.

To know how to paint a car, you should know what to paint it with. There are two ways to paint and two opinions on that. The first way is an electric paint sprayer with a 2.0 nozzle, e.g., Earlex 2900. This spray gun is cost-saving and very simple to use. Having Dempinox and an A/C line socket, you will be able to paint the car at home. The other way is a professional HVLP pressure feed spray gun with upper tank and 1.8 nozzle, e.g., DeVilbiss. To operate correctly, it needs an air compressor with the volume of no less than 100l, a hose of 10-12 mm ID, and a good air extractor. A manometer is recommended to be used with the spray gun as it compensates for air pressure drops in air compressor and allows accurate setting of the necessary pressure that should not exceed 1.5 atmosphere.
Operating temperature for painting is from +18°С to +28°C. If the temperature is higher, 10 to 20 percent of thinner should be added in order for the material not to overdry in the air at the moment of spraying. When the temperature is lower, and there is no possibility to heat the booth, you should reduce material supply, apply thinner coats and give them more time to dry in order to avoid paint runs.
If this is the first time you paint a car, before you start, we strongly recommend to practice at any spare body element you can find. For example, take a hood and start spraying the material smoothly pressing the trigger, get accustomed to the weight and geometry of the spray gun, set up material delivery in it. The spray gun should not produce too much overspray. Hold the spray gun at 90 degree angle to the painted surface, following all the curves and protruding shapes of the body with your strokes. Observe the distance of 20 cm from the spray gun to the painted surface. The material should settle on the body as tiny wet drops almost touching each other. When drying, the coating applied should form an even smooth surface without runs or roughness.
Having practiced enough, let’s start painting the car. The first thing we have to do is to strengthen the edges of body elements, as well as those hard-to-reach areas we will not be able to cover with a spray gun. For this purpose we need Heavy Layer and a small artist paint brush with natural bristles. Heavy Layer is a clear thick material with an increased adhesion, supplied in 0.5 l cans. Let’s review the process of edge strengthening as in the case of a boot lid. Open the trunk and thoroughly paint the flat sides of the boot lid with a brush, as well as 1 cm of the edge of the inner side. Thus we obtain strengthened edges turned to the inaccessible to damage area. All edges, flanges, inner parts of door handles should be coated.
Next stage is applying the first adhesion coat, and to do so we need Dempinox Start which is applied on the entire body with a spray gun. One liter is required per one car. It is a clear material supplied in 1 liter cans. Dempinox Start is applied in thin coats, the drops should set on the body on a minimum distance from one another. Being applied, the primer coating should be given 30-40 minutes to dry, and you can start the main stage of painting.
How to calculate the amount of Dempinox Composite to apply onto the car? The more material we use, the thicker the protective film coating is. Recommended amount of Dempinox Composite to apply onto the car body in order to obtain a quality coating is 1 liter per 1 square meter.
Important! Hold the spray gun at 90 degree angle to body surface and at 20 cm distance following with your stroke all the curves and shapes of the car. The car should be painted in a circle, coat by coat, starting from the same spot. Paint the roof first, standing on the bench for even paint application. If you paint the car and do not stand on the bench, you will not be able to observe a 90 degree angle, and that will result in streaks on the finished surface. The coats are applied with strokes from left to right, lapping each stroke 50% over the preceding one. With a right-hand painting, it is recommended to paint from the left shoulder towards right side, making a stroke no longer than 1 meter, and don’t make steps at the moment of spraying. When you start applying the stroke, press the spray gun trigger smoothly, and smoothly release pressure at the end of the stroke, in order to prevent runs and spots. At the operating temperature of +18°C to +28°C a coat dries within 10-15 minutes.
To paint two tones on a car, first the whole car should be painted with one color and left to dry for 4 hours. In 4 hours it’s safe to put masking tape on the coat. Mask as much of the body as possible around the area you intend to paint, so that the new tone drops do not get on the preceding color coat and do not ruin your paint job.
Buying a bucket of paint, check if it is properly sealed. The material should be thoroughly mixed with a mixer or with a drill mixer attachment before use. Pour the material into spray gun through a 90-120 micron cone strainer. Each time when pouring the material into spray gun during painting, it is recommended to stir Dempinox for 20-30 seconds.
Many Dempinox Company specialists apply one liter of clear composite as a final coat, as mud and water better slide off it, and it collects less dust.

The main thing you should know about unmasking the car after painting with Dempinox composite is that the masking tape should be removed when the coat is still wet, right after the final coat is applied. The coat is considered wet for no more than 2 minutes after its application, at the temperature in the booth of no higher than +24°C. Don’t be in a rush when removing the tape, try not to pull up the wet coating. Paint once more the edges that dried a little before unmasking, wait for 20 seconds for the new coat to penetrate preceding ones and continue unmasking the car. If the rules of masking were strictly followed, unmasking will take 20 minutes. If you pulled up or damaged the edge of the coat when peeling off the tape, it is easy to fix. Take a small artist brush which you used earlier applying Heavy Layer, dip it into Dempinox used to paint the car and carefully touch up the damaged edge. If you removed some car parts, it is recommended to put them back to their places in an hour after the car was unmasked, to let the coating dry and gain strength.
